Antonio Cuna: I began drawing at a very young age, mostly Power Rangers, robots and comic book heroes. I remember collecting “How-to-Draw” books that taught me how to draw certain Disney and Marvel characters. As I began taking art classes in high school, I found that my favorite subject matter was the human figure. Landscapes were boring and still life was lifeless and dull, but there was so much excitement, depth, and emotion when drawing the human body. I took formal art classes my freshman year of college and grew more interested in portraits and the human face. I became very inspired by the works of 19th century impressionist artists and realist portraits, especially those of Edouard Manet. His paintings, such as Plum Brandy has been a constant source of inspiration and ideas. Most recently, I have been drawn towards various types of illustrations, from children’s books to cartoon characters. The illustrations of French designer So Me has opened up my eyes and has breathed new life into my fascination with bodies and faces. Character design is going to be my next venture. Thinking critically about the look of a character in order to match his or her intended persona.
